Free study tools are getting more capable

Google announced a set of education features in June 2026 that includes no-cost ACT and GRE practice tests in Gemini, study notebooks and guided learning experiences. It is also bringing Gemini experiences into Classroom with tools designed to work from course materials rather than from an unrelated chat history.

For students, this matters because the first layer of paid study software is increasingly being replaced by features bundled into tools they already use. Practice questions, study guides, quizzes and structured explanations are no longer automatically premium-only capabilities.

Test prep is the clearest place to reassess spending

A student preparing for an exam can now test whether the free practice experience is sufficient before buying a dedicated monthly plan. The right comparison is not whether a specialized product has more features. It is whether those extra features change your weekly preparation enough to justify another recurring charge.

Dedicated test-prep products can still be valuable for large question banks, detailed analytics, instructor-led courses or highly structured schedules. But the free baseline has improved, so the paid product should now prove its advantage rather than receive the benefit of the doubt.

Grounding in class material is a bigger deal than novelty

The Classroom direction is also important because a generic AI assistant can explain a topic well while still drifting away from the exact definitions, readings or methods used by a course. Study notebooks grounded in assigned material reduce that mismatch and make the tool more relevant to the next test or assignment.

Students should still verify important claims and follow school rules for AI use. A more education-focused interface does not remove the need for source checking or academic-integrity judgment.

ScoutSubs verdict

Before buying a separate AI study or test-prep subscription, run a one-week trial using the no-cost tools available through Gemini, Classroom and your institution. Upgrade only if a paid platform delivers a specific advantage such as better analytics, expert instruction, a larger verified question bank or a workflow you use every day.
