The payment models are fundamentally different
Blackmagic Design lists DaVinci Resolve Studio 21 at $295, while the standard Resolve edition remains free. Adobe Premiere is sold through subscription plans, either as a single app or as part of Creative Cloud. That makes the first comparison straightforward: Resolve asks for a larger upfront payment, while Premiere creates a continuing software cost.
The cheaper choice depends on how long the editor will use the product and which surrounding services the subscription replaces.
Resolve has a strong break-even story
An editor who can complete paid work in the free edition may not need to buy anything. Studio adds the Neural Engine, additional effects, advanced noise reduction, higher-format support and other professional features.
Compare the $295 purchase with 24 or 36 months of the Adobe plan you would actually buy. Do not compare it with an introductory Adobe rate that expires after a few months.
Premiere earns value through the Adobe workflow
Premiere can be the better business purchase when projects depend on After Effects, Photoshop, Audition, Frame.io or a shared Creative Cloud environment. The subscription then supports a production system rather than one editor.
It is less compelling when Premiere is the only Adobe application used regularly and collaborators are comfortable with Resolve.
Migration cost is real
Keyboard habits, plugins, templates, colour workflows and client handoffs can outweigh the software price. Test a complete project before switching, including captions, audio, review, export and archive.
A one-time licence is not a saving if the editor loses billable days rebuilding the workflow. A subscription is not automatically wasteful if it removes those handoffs.
